Philadelphia’s Independent Film Theaters to Visit This Weekend

Cut back to a warm summer evening a few weeks ago. The streets are buzzing with the hum of conversations from diners seated outside enjoying their meal. I found myself standing in front of a quaint, retro theater flashing the title of a cult classic. Inside, an intimate, dimly-lit theater awaits, featuring a screening of the cult classic “The Room”. As i sat in the theater with the other eager moviegoers, to my surprise, Director Tommy Wiseau took to the front and began holding a Q&A session with us. This was my introduction to Philadelphia’s indie theater scene, and I can’t say I wasn’t dying to find out more.

If you're a film buff, you know there's nothing quite like the charm and intimacy of an independent film theater. Forget the polished blockbuster experiences; here, it's all about unique storytelling, homey vibes, and a sense of community. These theaters don’t just screen hard-to-find, independent films, they also offer an intimate atmosphere that transports you beyond the mainstream film experience. As the lights dim and the screen flickers to life, you’ll discover that these venues are more than just places to watch movies—they're the perfect place to kick back for a few hours of storytelling and escapism.

Starting with The Landmark Ritz Five in Old City on Walnut - this theater is well known for its wide-ranging mix of festival favorites, foreign films, and thought-provoking documentaries. The Ritz houses a cozy, intimate setting and iconic history dating back to 1976, making it the perfect spot to settle into the world of independent cinema.

Next, journey to the Philadelphia Film Center. Centrally located in the heart of Center City, this theater is more than just a place to watch movies—it's escapism at its finest. With its grandiose architecture and top-tier technology, the Film Center is perfect for those evenings when you want to mix a bit of glamor with your love for film.

Then, there's the PFS Bourse Theater, just a mere stone's throw from Independence Hall. It features a variety of indie screenings and film discussions that make it a magnet for intellectuals. Bonus: when this theater was taken over by the Philadelphia Film Society in 2021, it underwent a restoration and is now complete with updated projectors and an updated surround sound system.

If you wander a bit further from the city limits, you'll stumble upon the charming Hiway Theater in Jenkintown. Since 1913, this community-focused theater has been delighting audiences with everything from indie films to family-friendly features. A piece of living history, it’s undoubtedly worth the short journey.

And then there’s the Ambler Theater in the nearby town of Ambler. This beautifully restored Art Deco theater offers a fantastic lineup of indie films, classics, and even live performances. It combines all the nostalgia of the past with the modern magic of film of today.

A short while away, we arrive at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute along the Main Line. This nonprofit theater is dedicated to enriching the community through cinema. It offers a robust program that includes new indie releases, exclusive screenings, and educational events.

Each of these theaters offers a unique window into the world of film, bringing stories to life in ways that transcend the ordinary. Ready to roll the reel?
